Starting with the End in Mind – Virtual Surgical Planning and Implant Placement in Maxillo-Mandibular Reconstruction & Rehabilitation

The anatomic constraints of the craniofacial skeleton are a challenge for finding an adequate bone for sustained osseointegration particularly in the ablated maxilla, the resected mandible and the rehabilitated facial bones using the grafted fibula. Regular implant fixtures seldom satisfy both the surgeon and the Prosthodontist for sustained osseous and prosthetic retention of the rehabilitation. With the era of computer-assisted design and 3D printing, virtual surgical planning for maxillomandibular reconstruction and rehabilitation has gained popularity over the last 5 years. Despite the ease of computer simulation, the virtual surgical planning and clinical execution of the osteotomies and implant placement requires a significant learning curve. This workshop aims to provide interactive lectures on how to utilize this technology to its full potential beyond just using it for cutting guides for osteotomies, provide tips and tricks for decision making on flap design and orientation. It will involve live planning sessions of a mandibular and maxillary reconstruction using a fibula composite flap with guidance on how to plan for simultaneous implant insertions.

This workshop is divided into two main sessions. The morning session will focus on the reconstructive and rehabilitation with implant supported prosthesis targeted at head and neck surgeons, reconstructive surgeons and oral and maxillofacial surgeons. The afternoon session will focus on the prosthetic phase and planning which may be more relevant to a prosthodontists day to day practice.
